Bits and Pieces

– First homegrown salad of the year! I’m glad I decided to grow lettuce indoors this winter; it’s so easy and satisfying to have something ready to go this early. My cilantro is just about ready for some light thinning — I think guacamole might be in order! (That’s a veggie burger under the extremely melted cheese, by the way. I covered it up and then forgot about it for just a minute…)

– The cats have always spent nights in ‘their room’ (the utility room, here) — that started when Beany and Booty used to chase each other around all night. When they had the entire basement in Minneapolis, I never heard a peep. In Hinckley, they’ve been pretty good, but Birdy started being a monster a few weeks ago, crying off and on and waking me up. I’m not sure what changed. So, for the first time, the cats have been allowed to roam around the house at night. I even leave my bedroom door open, because Birdy will sit outside it and cry, otherwise. The strangest part is that neither cat actually comes into my room. They seem to just hang out in the hallway and family room all night long, not doing much. Suspicious.

– My mom contacted Laurie a while back about adding a couple of Laurie’s owl prints to her owlway (owl + hallway) at the cabin. Laurie graciously obliged, and now the prints are hanging up. The internet is a pretty cool place, no?

    Hi Anna,
I wonder if you have a good veggie burger recipe made from soya mince? I bought some soya mince few weeks ago and wanted to make a burger but couldn’t find one reliable recipe! google flooded me with recipes but non looked good! any suggestions?

    Now Cats
My cats, Kiwi and Luna, are not permitted to get into my bedroom because of my allergy. All my linen are made from anti-allergy material and they would ruin them. They sleep in the sitting-room-cum-kitchen in front of my bedroom. At 6 am sharp, Luna would start whimpering in front of my room and I will shout “Stop Luna”, and she would stop! Few minutes later Kiwi would start his zealous attempts to open the door and his bang bang would chase away any sleep I had. My shouts of “stop Kiwi” never worked with him.

Hmm, I usually buy premade veggie burgers. I’ve made my own out of beans and oats and things like that, but I’m thinking that veggie mince isn’t sticky enough to form a burger. You could try looking for a recipe that uses texturized vegetable protein (TVP) as the protein base, as it sort of has the same crumbly texture — you’d probably want to season it less, since mince is already flavored, whereas TVP isn’t really. Or you could try making ‘meat’balls with it!
