Seedlings

My tiny cucumber seedlings are off to a good start, don’t you think? That giant CFL grow light bulb works! I’ve ordered another one, so I can have a larger pool of light for my seedlings. I have lettuce and arugula sprouted, as well as cilantro, which just came up. My plan is to grow those indoors long-term (meaning I’ll never plant them outside), whereas I’m hoping to pot up the other seedlings and keep them growing healthily with grow lights until the spring, when they can go in the garden. That’s a long time away, so it’s really just an experiment. But it makes me happy to see something growing!

Anna, but why don’t you have a green house? Or is it too cold out even in a green house. I’m hoping to have one installed soon. Another question, do you sprout seeds and beans? I do and they taste lovely. I freeze the beans for later use. Alfalfa seeds are great, even fenugreek seeds.

I hope I will have a greenhouse some day! I’m not sure what sort of temperatures they can deal with, though, and I definitely wouldn’t want to be trekking out to one every day when it’s below zero (Fahrenheit)! I like to daydream about having a conservatory/solarium room for all sorts of plants, though.

And I do occasionally grow sprouts — I even got a special sprouting tray for Christmas, along with a selection pack of seeds!

I sprouted some chickpeas this week….was soaking them for humous and then didn’t feel like cooking them so rinsed and drained them…and they’d sprouted by morning…now that they’ve gone through all that work, it seems like i ought to take advantage of their sproutiness. trying to decide if i want to try a raw humous with them; i think they can go one more day before decision time.
