Mornings No. 16

There are four apples on my apple tree in Minneapolis (I think — they blend in well). Last year, I had four but only wound up getting to eat two of them, because the squirrels stole the other two. They did so even though I’d wrapped the apples up in netting; they couldn’t really eat them, but they gnawed on them through the netting — so annoying. I think I have some leftover metal window screen (from rescreening last summer), so I’ll use that this year, and we’ll see how good squirrels are at biting through metal.

When I was mowing the lawn at the Hinckley House on Saturday (have I mentioned that we have a riding lawn mower there and that I love it?), I noticed that the very sad apple tree in our yard actually has one little apple. The deer have stripped the leaves/branches off most of the tree, except for the top, which is where the apple is growing. That poor tree needs a wire mesh bag big enough to cover the entire thing.
