Mornings No. 2

I’ve been meaning to bring up my old teacher’s desk to the HH for months now. If you’ve been reading since 2006 and have an amazing memory, you might recall this desk, which I bought off Craigslist and intended to refinish. That was actually the seller’s photo; I’ve just done some trawling through old camera files, and this horribly lit photo seems to be the only shot I’ve got. And that’s from the month and a half I stayed at my parents’ house while waiting to close on my Minneapolis home. I have no idea why I never took a picture of it in my office.

Anyway, I didn’t use it for long, and it wound up in my basement, still unfinished. When the closing on the HH was delayed (an issue with tracking down the deed — we had no idea how long it would take (three extra weeks, in the end)), I went into manic project mode to distract myself and finally sanded and restained the teacher’s desk. I would have done it all the same shade of stain, but A) there was no way I was going to meticulously sand down those curvy drawer pulls and legs and B) the side panels of the desk turned out to be not-very-great ply/veneer. So those parts got painted black, and I looove the result. Rob will be hauling it up in his Ranger on Thursday, so we brought everything upstairs this morning (we’re taking a mini-trip down to La Crosse in the meantime), and I can’t wait to show you the entire desk in place!

I picked up an old desk – the kind where one side opens to a spring loaded shelf for your manual typewrite!?!?!
a few years ago from a friend of a friend who wanted it out of her garage! I love the big size and as we re-arrange the office that it is in, I’m having trouble deciding the best use, because another size or shape would work better, but this one has TONS more character! I like what you’ve done with yours.
