Ah ha! I finally figured out the third book I read back in May. All it took was looking at my past book posts (you can find them all here) and seeing the photo I used on the last one. I finished May with Daniel J. Levitin’s The World in Six Songs, and in June, I read Anatomy and Physiology for Dummies and Julia Wertz’s Drinking at the Movies. Actually, I read one other book in June, as well (bringing the total for the first six months of 2011 to eighteen books finished), but it’s one you don’t need to know about. Click through to the full post to read my thoughts on May and June’s books.
The World in Six Songs — I had read Daniel Levitin’s This Is Your Brain on Music a few years ago, and I absolutely loved it. So I bought The World in Six Songs not too long after that, but it didn’t capture me in quite the same way. It’s very anecdotal, with fewer big ‘wow’ moments about the workings of the brain. But it is still interesting, even if the structure (the ‘six songs’ in the title) seems a little forced. I’m glad I picked it up again and read the whole thing.
Anatomy and Physiology for Dummies — Why’d I read this? I figured it was about time I knew a bit more about human insides. I was fairly diligent about working my way through this book, but it’s definitely (and obviously) not a page-turner. It was the first ‘…for Dummies’ book I’ve ever read, though, and I was impressed. Nice, clean organization of the information and a good tone from the author. If nothing else, at least I can remember the major bones of the skull!
Drinking at the Movies — I picked this one up at Powell’s Books in Portland. I read Julia Wertz’s blog, and I was really happy to get my hands on more of her comics. She started the whole house/apartment drawing style that I used to draw my house. Drinking at the Movies is about her move from San Francisco to New York, and I’d like to get her other print comics some day, too.
I just finished the top book in this post’s photo (Another Day in the Frontal Lobe), and I’m hoping to start and finish at least one or two more this month!
