I finally dug out my last home-grown butternut squash (from the back of a cupboard) and roasted+pureed it. I tried a tofu-less vegan pumpkin pie recipe with one cup of the puree, but it had cornstarch in it, and that plus the ground spices made it too gritty for my liking. I used another half a cup to make some apple/squash sauce:

Even with equal parts apple and squash, I still think the apple flavour dominates. It was satisfying (if a bit tedious) to scrape it all through the mesh strainer, though. I've still got a cup of puree in the freezer -- we'll see if I get any ideas for it.

Just because it's all I've been thinking about since about seven pm yesterday (and even though it's a slightly inane subject), I need to mention that I got a haircut. The style itself isn't really different -- just a trim. But I decided to finally get proper bangs, after having half-hearted ones for quite a while. The girl cut them wet and dried them after doing the rest of the cut. Once they were dry, I was starting to feel pretty good. They fell just below my eyebrows and I felt it was a look I could pull off. Then she came back to trim them and thin them out.
A few seconds later, and they were suddenly almost a centimeter ABOVE my eyebrows, and it just makes me want to cry. I look so stupid. Despite the fact that there are much more terrible things going on in the world, it makes me sick to my stomach to think about my fringe. Why would a hair stylist do that? I really feel like canceling everything for the foreseeable future, until they've grown to a decent length.
Excuse me, I have a duvet to hide under now.
getting bangs can be quite a shock so give yourself some time to get used it. also, remember (and this sounds silly and could be an old wifes tale) but hair goes into 'shock' when cut in that it 'springs up' and isn't fully relaxed. Give it a day, wash and dry it yourself and just see what happens. i'm sure it looks fabulous and trust me, we've all been there (far too many times for my liking) :)

Something to keep in mind (not to excuse her, but perhaps to mitigate...) is that if she had cut them to be the perfect length, in just a week or so they'd be too long and in your eyes.
I usually have my stylist go a little shorter than I'd prefer, so that I can go longer between cuts.

Jackie -- I don't blame the stylist, really, since I didn't explicitly say not to cut them above a certain level. But it'll definitely be at least three weeks (a month? a month and a half?) before they've grown enough for me not to be completely embarrassed.

a short bang (i know it as a fringe here in the uk) can look really funky, like heather bailey.
give it a week or so, and it will have grown a bit and you'll be a bit more used to it.

Well, I remember you when you didn't have beautiful hair every day and you still looked good then. Now you'll be able to find out who's just been hanging out with you because of the immaculate 'do.

They say the only difference between a bad haircut and a good haircut is about 2 weeks. I have been the victim of 'monster bangs' (that's what the kids call them) on more than one occasion, but they don't last long.

At least your hair will grow back. Think about me. Poor me.

Don't hide! Shorter bangs are really coming back into style lately--you're trendy!
While I would love to have bangs again (grew them out in 5th grade), I know that they are a recipe for disaster. I have a widow's peak, a cowlick on the left, and one single block of short bang-hair that becomes a ringlet on the right. Pretty much, bangs make me look like I do my hair by jabbing my finger in an electrical socket.

What's worse is when you cut your bangs yourself - and they look great - but ooh just trim this spot a bit, and just a little over here - and before you know it you look like a three year old.
Mmmmm... Squash.
