For a while now, I've been pretty unstoppable, as far as getting ill goes. I can remember only a couple of minor colds in the last year, and they were quick to pass. So it figures that a trip to the doctor has knocked me out. It was just an ordinary trip, and I decided to get back up to date with my Tetanus booster. I do a lot of climbing around in piles of rusty nails, you know (barefoot, of course!), so I thought it couldn't hurt.
Wrong! Their 'slight fever' has turned out to be a fever, aching limbs, a headache, and a general lack of energy. Bah. In between naps and moaning, I made some muffins to fix myself up:

Carrot, raisins, flax, AND wheat germ -- that should do it! It's funny: I remember making something quite similar to this in seventh grade Home Ec. -- I think the teacher called them Sunshine Muffins. We all hated them, because they contained carrots and raisins and not a single chip of chocolate. I think my friends bribed a table-mate into eating the entire batch, by agreeing to do the washing up.
How things change, eh?

I'm pretty happy with this recipe -- they're not too sweet, which gives one the perfect excuse to sprinkle on some cinnamon sugar. I can't be sure, but I think they're making me feel better. Take that, modern medicine!
dude, was that you, me, and erin and Lucas? Cause I know Erin was there when we were bribing, but I thought it may have been the horrible horrible mexican salad we had made. Anyway I maintain the 7th grade muffins could have seriously killed someone. Seriously.

Thank you so much for writing about this! I got myself into a fix with some rusty barbed wire and it had been 20 years since my last tetnus shot. So last Friday I went for a tetnus shot and I slept for nearly 4 days straight with aching all over and just feeling awful. I could hardly hold my head up for the faitgue! I thought I was losing it! So thanks and hope you are doing better!

way to act like the bribery was MY idea, mo -- it was totally you. and yes, it was the muffins, but lucas actually liked them, so the bribery thing wasn't nearly as manipulative as it sounds. by the way, was this the recipe where we used baking power instead of baking soda (or vice versa) and turned the muffins into rocks? good times. i can't believe we passed the class. (also, anna, please don't kick me off the blog for bringing down your foodie cred.)

They (both these muffins and the awful ones from seventh grade) sound like Morning Glory muffins to me. Though with flax and wheat germ I'm sure they're better for you than the average Morning Glory muffin. I hope they do the trick cure what ails you.

Erin -- I wasn't in your Home Ec class, so you're not bringing down MY foodie cred! You and Mo always had classes together, and I was stuck with nobody I knew. Sigh.

Dear Anna, you're so funny! How we change! I was recently remembering how I hated to babysit for one family because they had NOTHING good to eat: they just had all this tofu-organic-health foody stuff. No chips, no cookies. Guess what MY cupboard looks like these days? If I have cookies, they are homemade gluten and dairy free and GONE in 24 hours with my boys around!

hi anna, i'm sorry to hear you are under the weather. i remember the days when i put heaping tablespoons of sugar on my Cheerios, and now the thought of all that refined sweeter & white flour creeps me out. your nutritious muffins and naps are bound to help you heal. feel better already and have a marvelous weekend! it's spring-like in Chicago, i hope you're enjoying the same.
p.s. i used to have a source for Graham flour, but now i can't find it any where. got any ideas?

Just realized I've been typing my blog url wrong on here. Anyway, the muffins look yummy. I've been using flax meal in everything. Alas, I still have a sore throat!

Hiya Anna,
Poor sweetness with fever, I'm glad your muffins are helping, there is something so comforting about eating freshly baked produce that it must certainly be better than pills from a packet. I hope you perk up soon.

I love the look of those muffins! They are beautiful to looke at and they sound wonderful. And I can definitely see that muffins have medicinal purposes. I also feel the same way about cupcakes. Just wanted to mention that you really get some great photos - they look professional. And now you'll tell me you're a professional photographer....well regardless of profession, your pictures are great! :o)

Hope you feel better soon. If I had some of those lovely muffins, I'm sure I'll feel much better too! (plus a handy helper in the kitchen to clean up, that is!) :P
