More Kitchen Love

You’ll say when you’ve had enough house photos, won’t you? It’s been one sunny day after another here, and the house does look so nice with sun streaming through the windows.

I tend to go to the supermarket on either Sunday or Monday, since the coupons come in the Sunday paper. I went early this morning, while the streets and shops were still empty. It’s a new era of food shopping for me — I’m actually enjoying it, for once. By going alone, with nobody to meet and no train to catch when I’m done, I’m able to amble along and take as long as I like. And I think the amount of time I take is inversely related to how much money I spend. Instead of quickly picking something off the shelf, I think about what I’ve already got in the cupboards. I buy more fresh fruits and vegetables and buy ‘cupboard goods’ only when I plan on using them that week.
I’ve never really noticed my eating habits changing with the seasons, but I’ve been eating an awful lot of soup lately. I buy tins of Healthy Choice ‘Country Vegetable’ (I name it because it’s the only tinned vegetable soup I’ve ever been enthusiastic about!) and have that for four meals a week, usually (one tin equals two meals — with sides, of course). I feel as though I ought to make my own vegetable soup, but I don’t want to mess with a good thing! Do you tend to change your meals throughout the year (as foodie magazines would suggest), or do you tend to make the same things day in and day out?

I tend to eat the same things every day. Have a look at Crazy Aunt Purl – she has a long post about automating one’s eating habits. It makes sense really.

    Hi! Loving the pictures :)
I think I change what I eat a lot over the year… in the winter I eat more soups (like you) and vegetables like carrots, potatoes and the like, while in the summer I eat lighter food, more salads and such… seems pretty natural to me, and I’ve heard, that it is the most healthy to eat according to what is “in season”, since it will be more natural grown, not using so many chemicals and uhh what’s it called? The stuff that makes plants grow… gah, my brain is slow today! Hope you get my idea ;)
Elisabeth – got a sudden urge for soup, since it is freezing here in DK now *shudders*

Your house is beautiful! Do you really feed Booty up on a shelf?

I try to eat with the seasons; tomatoes in the summer, carrots in the winter and so on. But it’s hard since I love my fresh tomatoes on pizza :)

  6. Mmmmmm, I’m going to be the odd one out here I think. I am massively pro seasonal eating. Eating seasonally not only improves the taste of your food but also helps your local farmers to stay afloat and reduces the size of your carbon footprint. I used to eat green beans right the way through the year but when I learnt more about my footprint I noticed that each pack was flown into the UK from Kenya. I can’t justify those emissions. It takes a bit of getting used to. But if that vegetable soup of yours is as good as it sounds you’ll be used to it in no time.
    Here endeth the lesson *blush*
Sorry for going on. I feel strongly about eating seasonally because I can see no negative connotations to it at all, only positive ones. Oh and please don’t stop the home posts. I love the way you have done the place up.

I do (more often than not but there are exceptions) because seasonal produce is cheaper and as Cherry mentioned, it helps to support the local farmers. We tend to buy our veggies and fruits from a local grocer.

with a cute house like yours there is no such thing as too many house pictures! and i love to grocery shop early sunday morning too. something about going to market at that time is just so homey… with the week ahead full of possibilities

I definitely eat seasonally, even though most things are available all times of year (like green beans, I will eat them any time).
I just love to make soups with root veg in winter, and lots of mash…
Mashed sweet potato, mashed carrot and mashed turnip with hummus and raw garlic, seriously comforting.
Mashed potato with baked beans and tikka masala paste.
Mashed potato with chopped raw celery and garlic.
Mashed potato, parsnip and carrot with butter beans. Get my drift…?
But soups with root veggies in big chunks, I adore them. And leeks. Then in summer I go all greek/italian with salads and feta etc.
Keep posting house pics, I never tire of the loveliness.

thanks for the feb. calendar….I was needing one of these. It’s great!
The menu changes quite a bit with the seasons at my house. I have been on a huge soup kick lately. We have been eating lots of homemade soup-sometimes with good bread and lots of butter. Mmmmm. In the summer or anytime my deck isn’t covered with snow I do some grilling…lots more in the summer though. I miss my summer fruit right now. I currently live amid a bunch of great orchards…fresh peaches, apples, blueberries. Oh, how I miss them now. We eat a lot of fresh fruit in the summer…plus lots of garden produce.
I have enjoyed the house photos…it looks like a charming place. How fun it must be to be doing all that decorating!
